HDFS connection status hangs on computers not connected to the internet

When you go to the connection view page on a computer not connected to the internet, the UI hangs. I think this is because HDFS is picking a default socket timeout of infinity under these conditions. There must be some way to pick a better socket timeout (perhaps 1 minute?)

This also causes the HDFS UI test to hang under similar conditions.
