issues with repository selection

    Description

      John has highlighted some issues in repository selected, putting in a quick fix to null it if the local one is selected.

      However, this still isn't ideal and I'm seeing times when local installation doesn't take, as well as local installation forcing an instant remote repo check. Give it a once over.

      I will also remove the legacy metadata handling for simplification now that the repository is fully populated.
