Port Appearance Handler from 3.0 back to 2.0

As discussed on the mailing list I'm looking to port the appearance handler mechanism from 3.0 (trunk) to 2.0. The work will be handled in individual sub tasks trying to get on par with 3.0 in order to not hinder releases in between.
